Willie Wagtail
Rhipidura leucophrys
A Willie Wagtail spotted by Gracie Gadsden at Lake Weeroona in Bendigo, Victoria during April 2026.
The Willie Wagtail is so named due to its habit of flicking (wagging) its tail!
They are a large black and white songbird, around 20cm, with a fine bill and long legs. They are white below and are black above. They have white “eyebrows” and a white nape. Their call is a musical “chitting” sound.
According to the Australian Museum, Willie Wagtails will aggressively swoop at larger birds to protect their territory.
It can look similar to a Restless Flycatcher.

Lovely sighting! they are definite favourites - pretty, chirpy, active, brave, musical! Probably one of the first birds I remember enjoying as a child. Thanks for sharing.. :-))
